2014-06-23 - Mandar Dewoolkar Receives NSF Grant for High Energy X-ray Tomography Scanner

Sat, 06/14/2014 - 04:04
The objective of this Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) award is to acquire a versatile, robust, high energy, and high resolution X-ray microtomography (micro-CT) system that facilitates nondestructive mapping of the internal structure of a variety of materials enhancing multidisciplinary research and education at the University of Vermont (UVM). Since the introduction of computer-based X-ray tomographic imaging in the medical services field about 40 years ago, X-ray computed tomography is now applied to the nondestructive study of various natural, historic and engineered materials in the fields of engineering, geology, materials science, biology, and geo-energy, among others. This state-of-the-art technology provides non-destructive, high resolution, 3D imaging of materials that enables researchers to tackle many contemporary, previously intractable, fundamental and applied research questions related to infrastructure security, safety, health, and energy, with direct benefits to the society. The instrument will support research and educational activities of eighteen investigators from diverse fields of civil, environmental, mechanical, electrical and bio engineering, plant and soil science, geology, historic preservation, medicine and materials science. With this initial set of users and research applications for the instrument, it is believed that the impact of the acquisition of this micro-CT will be substantial for providing powerful new capabilities for researchers and their students and will thus lead to new on- and off-campus research and training collaborations.

Wed, 05/28/2014 - 09:10
As Vermont's climate becomes warmer, wetter and more volatile, the need for research-based predictive tools to inform policy and land-use decisions in the state has never been greater. A $20 million grant from the National Science Foundation is helping Vermont develop just this innovative decision-making capability, placing it at the forefront of states focused on creating informed public policy in a changing world. Awarded in 2011, the five-year grant centers on the Lake Champlain Basin. It brings together Vermont higher education institutions, state agencies, non-profit groups and the private sector through Vermont EPSCoR, the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, based at the University of Vermont.

2014-05-29 - Asim Zia, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Community Development and Applied Economics

Wed, 05/28/2014 - 09:10
International efforts to deal with climate change have been — many experts argue — a spectacular failure. United Nations treaties, including the 1997 Kyoto Protocol that the United States chose not to ratify, form a very leaky bucket for catching greenhouse gases. A new book, Post-Kyoto Climate Governance (Routledge), by Associate Professor Asim Zia, Ph.D., a fellow in the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics, ranges across several disciplines, looking for the causes of failure in international climate policy and searching for solutions. These may require dramatic new approaches, like global taxes, new forms of organized confrontation, and a willingness to reconsider reflexive attachments, he argues, like a belief in the benefits of free
