Scott Hamshaw, a PhD candidate with Vermont EPSCoR, presented his doctoral dissertation defense on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. The defense, "Fluvial processes in Motion: Measuring Streambank Erosion and Suspended Sediment Flux using Advanced Geomatics and Machine Learning," examined streambank erosion and the resulting sediment increase in the Lake Champlain Basin area.

We quantify the biases in the diurnal cycle of temperature in ERA-Interim for both warm and cold season using hourly climate station data for four stations in Saskatchewan from 1979 to 2006. The warm season biases increase as opaque cloud cover decreases, and change substantially from April to October. The bias in mean temperature increases almost monotonically from small negative values in April to small positive values in the fall.

Drs. Matthew White, Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Vermont and Laurie Grigg, from the Department of Geology and Environmental Science at Norwich University, were each awarded an individual RII Track-4 from the National Science Foundation for their respective research.

During the Senate Appropriations Committee staff's visit, five of the VT EPSCoR BREE interns had the chance to briefly introduce their research. The interns talked about the broad scope of research that happens under BREE.

Two new journal articles co-authored by BREE Team Leader Asim Zia were recently published in the Journal on Policy and Complex Systems.

Interns and mentors from Vermont EPSCoR's BREE Climate Team visited Dartmouth College in July 2017 to share their findings with colleagues.

Declan McCabe, PhD, Professor of Biology at Saint Michael's College and member of BREE, led a macroinvertebrate workshop for educators in his laboratory on July 19, 2017. The hands on workshop offered middle and high school instructors tools with which they could incorporate the study of aquatic ecosystems into their curricula.
