2014-04-04 - RACC team presents at New England Association of Environmental Biologists (NEAEB) 38th annual conference

Many members of the RACC team attended and presented at the New England Association of Environmental Biologists (NEAEB) 38th annual conference, held in Burlington, Vermont this past March 26th through the 28th. The conference draws participants from all New England State environmental departments, the Federal government, professionals from NGOs, other public/private groups, and academia, to present, share, and discuss topics of environmental protection, conversation, and water resources management. Among those that presented their research were RACC members Peter Isles, Chris Koliba, Asim Zia, Kristen Underwood, Declan McCabe, Bob Genter, YaoYang Xu, and Scott Hamshaw. Other contributors included Andrew Schroth and past EPSCoR RACC undergraduate interns, Anne Burnham and Hannah Kittler, and CWDD Technician Katie Chang. An opening plenary on Climate Change was given by Lesley-Ann Dupigny-Giroux, the Vermont State Climatologist. Stakeholder, Dr. Curt Stager, from Paul Smith's College also participated in the workshop.

Sarah Coleman, a graduate student in the Policy & Governance RACC group, visited the Vermont State House to help inform legislators about the crowd sourcing DELPHI survey that seeks input on the the health of the Lake Champlain Basin. Lindsay Wieland, new Director of the VT EPSCoR Center for Workforce Development at Saint Michael's College, Patrick Clemins, VT EPSCoR Cyber Specialist and Lillian Gamache, Project Coordinator for VT EPSCoR also attended and shared information with legislators about VT EPSCoR.

2014-04-04 - Record Attendance: 2014 Vermont EPSCoR Student Research Symposium

Record attendance capped off the research year at the VT EPSCoR Center for Workforce Development and Diversity (CWDD) 6th annual Student Research Symposium on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at the Sheraton Hotel in Burlington, VT.

Over 190 persons attended the symposium which featured 44 high school students representing 18 Vermont school districts, and 3 districts outside Vermont including from as far away as Puerto Rico, in addition to 42 undergraduate students from nine Vermont colleges including the Community College of Vermont, two universities in Puerto Rico, University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Texas A&M University. All of these students conducted research as a part of the Research on Adaptation to Climate Change in the Lake Champlain Basin: New Understanding through Complex Systems (RACC) program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

2014-04-02 - Donna Rizzo - Winner of the 2014 George V. Kidder Outstanding Faculty Award

The UVM Alumni Association has named Donna Rizzo, professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, winner of the 2014 George V. Kidder Outstanding Faculty Award.

The annual award honors full time faculty for excellence in teaching and advising, for their ability to inspire students and have a lasting influence on their lives and for their positive impact on campus life beyond the classroom. Dozens of faculty, alumni and students wrote in support of her nomination.

Rizzo received her doctorate from UVM in 1994 and has been in a tenure-track faculty position since 2002. She has received more than $8 million in research funding and was recently named to the Dorothean Chair in the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, established by Stuart “Red” Martin in honor of his wife, Dorothy, which honors faculty whose work promises to advance the field, who are doing major scholarly work with graduate students, and who teach basic engineering to undergraduates.
