Colin Beier is a tenure-track Research Associate in the Department of Forest and Natural Resources Management and Adirondack Ecological Center at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. His research interests are forest landscapes as social-ecological systems, their responses to multiple drivers of change (including climate, land use, invasives and pollution), and developing frameworks and tools for making better real-world decisions. He teaches several areas of ecology (forest, landscape, global change) as well as graduate seminars in ecological economics, adaptive management and regional sustainability. Colin is an ecologist interested in the complex relationships between economies, institutions and the ecosystems upon which society depends. Colin's doctoral research examined the drivers, dynamics and outcomes of changes in climate and resource governance on the social-ecological system of Southeast Alaska, including the Tongass National Forest. This wide-ranging work has been published in Canadian Journal of Forest Research, Ecosystems, Conservation Biology, and Ecology & Society. Past research projects also include an analysis of adaptive cycle dynamics, institutional inertia and rigidity traps in large-scale forest resource systems and the creation of a sustainable biofuels roadmap for New York State.
