NEWRnet Outreach: Harwood Union Middle School 7th Grade

On Wednesday, October 28, 2015, the CWDD Staff met Harwood Union Middle School seventh graders at Lozelle Brook - right on the school campus! Seventh grade science teacher Angela Selvaggio has been teaching her classes about watersheds and the physical, chemical, and biological indicators of water quality.

At the stream, students first performed a site assessment, noting recent weather, dominant vegetation, and checking water and sediment samples from Lozelle Brook for obvious signs of pollution. The students then divided into smaller groups to collect benthic macroinvertebrates from the brook and pick them out of the net for identification. Highlights of the day included wearing waders and finding some excellent dragonfly larvae.
