Lesley-Ann Dupigny-Giroux Awarded Lifetime Achievement Award by American Association of Geographers

BREE researcher and Vermont State Climatologist Lesley-Ann Dupigny-Giroux, PhD will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Geographers (AAG) in February 2022.

The award comes after a unanimous decision by the AAG's Climate Specialty Group, which chose to honor Dr. Dupigny-Giroux for her many achievements in climate science. This body of work includes 25 years as Vermont's State Climatologist and over 40 peer-reviewed publications in the fields that include climate variability and change, severe weather hazards, drought, and remote sensing.

"I was shocked and humbled to receive word about being the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award winner of the American Association of Geographers' Climate Specialty Group," said Dr. Dupigny-Giroux. "The Award has been conferred on some of the most brilliant and pioneering climatologists in the Nation, scientists whose life's work has enriched our understanding of so many sub-fields of climatology and climate science. I use their textbooks in my climatology classes and refer to their seminal papers in my upper-level seminar. It is truly an honor and a privilege to be joining this august group of my colleagues and predecessors!!"

The AAG Annual Meeting will feature more than 6,000 presentations, posters, workshops, and field trips by leading scholars, experts, and researchers. Attendees including geographers, GIS specialists, environmental scientists, and other leaders will share and discuss the latest in research and applications in geography, sustainability, and GIScience. Previous recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award include Carol Harden, PhD of the University of Tennessee, David Robinson, PhD, the New Jersey State Climatologist, and Ruth Fincher, PhD of Melbourne, Australia, a leader in the fields of feminist geography and urban geography.
