SOCKS Team Science Workshop: Suggestions from the Group
Items to consider moving forward: - Be conscious and intentional about inclusion.
- Exhibit epistemic humility, not taking on tasks that we are not prepared or qualified for.
- Be conscious of our vision. Allow for open communication and set expectations up front.
- Delineate responsibilities so everybody knows what we should do next. Set action items appropriately.
- Create working norms.
- Take turn speaking. Serve as equalizers and make sure that quieter voices are heard.
- Allow for silence to be okay. Encourage synthesis and reflection.
- Consider power as we add in graduate students and postdocs.
- Be mindful of language and note that it is okay to be naïve and ask questions.
- Figure out what the collaborative model will be. Are there leaders in charge or shared ownership instead? The structure should be set at the outset.
- Maintain a regularity of contact. This should include regular, routine professional meetings and may also include some social meetings. Take advantage of asynchronous communication to show respect for others' time.
- Have supportive accountability, holding each other accountable as we pursue the milestones of the project.
- Have fun. Treat people like humans.
- Creativity needs constraints. Storywrangler can be improved, but it is a constrained object.
- We are trying to be post-disciplinary and solve problems that matter. We want to make tools and find research that can better help the communities around us.
- Have a constructive attitude. Encourage “Yes and” to suggestions and creating projects.
- Use plain language when asking questions.
