Catherine Collins was recently named Vermont EPSCoR Diversity in Entrepreneurship Fellow at the Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies (VCET). Catherine will be responsible for developing and sustaining a diverse community of entrepreneurs throughout Vermont. She will focus on skills development, mentorship and networks required to help start, fund, scale and sustain new technology based business ventures. Specific focus areas are developing capacity building and outreach programs to increase participation and exposure to entrepreneurship from students and alumni of Vermont Colleges and Universities, develop a greater representation of women and minority entrepreneurs and stimulate entrepreneurship capacity and activity across Vermont, including rural areas.

2015-02-19 RACC High School Program: University Gardens High School

The RACC high school team from University Gardens School in San Juan, Puerto Rico is investigating nutrient impacts on algal growth. During the summer and fall of 2014, the RACC high school team created a partnership with the San Juan Botanical Gardens where the experiment is housed. Teacher Nelson Ruiz and his students Anthony Hernandez Vazquez and Radames Revilla conducted a series of trials to learn how various sources of nutrients impact algae. They have been monitoring the temperature, pH, nutrient levels, as well as algal response in a controlled setting. The team will present their data at the 2015 Vermont EPSCoR Student Research Symposium on March 30th.

The RACC high school team from Aurea E Quiles High School in Guanica, Puerto Rico is investigating macroinvertebrate recolonization following forest fires and prescribed burns in the dry forest of Guanica, PR. Teacher Glenda Almodovar-Morales and her students Grecia Izquierdo and Jose Izquierdo set a series of traps to collect dry-forest macroinvertebrates. They have been identifying the macronivertebrates using equipment at the aquatic ecology lab at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan. The team will present their data at the 2015 Vermont EPSCoR Student Research Symposium on March 30th.

Alan Alda, actor, director and writer, has had a lifelong interest in science. In addition to his well-known roles in M*A*S*H and West Wing, he hosted PBS’ Scientific American Frontiers from 1993 to 2005. After interviewing hundreds of scientists, Mr. Alda became convinced that many researchers have wonderful stories to tell, but some need help in telling them. Mr. Alda played an important role in the creation of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, and has led workshops that use improvisational theater games to help scientists communicate more directly and personally. He was co-chair of the 2009 World Science Festival in New York City, hosted the 2010 documentary miniseries
The Human Spark, and has written a play about the life of Marie Curie.

2015-01-19 RACC High School Program: Long Trail School Aquaponics Project

The RACC high school team from Long Trail School is investigating nutrient flux in a closed hydroponics system - to see how nutrients impact algal growth. In 2013, science teacher Scott Worland oversaw the construction of the school's new greenhouse which houses the hydroponic system. During the summer and fall of 2014, the 2014-15 RACC high school team led the design and construction of the hydroponic system, stocking tanks with macrophytes, algae, and trout. Scott Worland and his students have been monitoring the temperature, pH, nutrient levels, as well as plant and fish response since early fall. The team will present their data at the 2015 Vermont EPSCoR Student Research Symposium on March 30th.
