Dr. Lesley-Ann Dupigny-Giroux was an invited speaker and participant in the inaugural Diversity in the Computational Geosciences Workshop held at NCAR. The Diversity in the Computational Geosciences Workshop: Advancing a Robust National Community & System for Diversity in Higher Education was held on June 23-25, 2014.

The 1st Diversity in the Computational Geosciences Workshop was hosted at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. The goal of this workshop was to bring together diverse stakeholders from the computer science, geosciences, and STEM education communities to create a robust national community dedicated to broadening participation in 21st century geoscience.

Organizers explained: "It’s an exciting time for interdisciplinary fields like the computational geosciences. We are constantly adapting to the rapid technological advances that are transforming our understanding of the Earth System, in response to many critical societal needs. This goal, as you know, requires participation by a diverse workforce consisting of the “best and brightest” scientific and technical talent. Over the next three days, we invite you to join us in conversations and actions designed to ensure that this discipline remains cutting edge while advancing an ambitious national diversity agenda."

Organizers explained that one of the intended outcomes of this workshop is to jointly draft a report which captures our shared visions, knowledge, and experiences to help develop and examine research, curricula, and best practices. This report will be distributed to relevant NSF Directorates and Programs (e.g. GEO, CISE, EHR, EPSCoR) and Offices (e.g. the Office of Diversity and Inclusion) to inform and influence NSF policy, and to disseminate best practices.

During the workshop talks along the following crosscutting themes were presented: Barriers to Success: A Focus on Access, Accommodation, Recruitment & Retention Models and Approaches for Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education Interdisciplinary Programs: Effective Models and Curricular Development Post-secondary Student Training & Research Opportunities Expanding Research & Instruction Infrastructures
