Dr. Asim Zia appointed Associate Project Director for VT EPSCoR

VT EPSCoR and the VT Technology Council are very pleased to announce that Dr. Asim Zia has been appointed Associate Project Director for VT EPSCoR at the University of Vermont, beginning in January 2015.

Dr. Zia has an outstanding career of research, teaching and leadership. He joined the University of Vermont in 2008 and is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Community Development and Applied Economics with a secondary appointment in the Department of Computer Science. He also is a fellow in the Gund Institute. His research focuses on the development of computational and complex-systems based approaches for informing the theory and practice of public policy analysis.

Within VT EPSCoR he has served as a leader for the Integrated Assessment Model (IAM) since 2013 and a senior member of the Policy and Governance group. Dr. Zia has traveled to the National Science Foundation to report directly on progress for the Adaptation to Climate Change in the Lake Champlain Basin: New Understanding through Complex Systems (RACC) award; he has also presented dozens of RACC related posters and talks at international and national venues. He was most recently interviewed by BBC at the UN Climate Talks in Lima, Peru in December 2014. During his career, Dr. Zia has published thirty-two peer reviewed papers/book chapters and three books (including Post-Kyoto Climate Governance by Rutledge Press in 2013) and will celebrate a new book release on January 23 at the Davis Center at UVM for Diplomacy on Ice: Energy and the Environment in the Arctic and Antarctic by Yale University Press. He is also an academic editor of PLOS-One and associate editor of Complexity, Governance and Networks; and serves on numerous editorial boards as well as scientific review panel of NSF-funded National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center.

Dr. Zia has also been instrumental in the RII Track-2 VT EPSCoR collaborative award with Delaware and Rhode Island forming the Northeast Water Resources Network (NEWRnet) and the establishment of the Social Ecological Gaming Simulation Laboratory (SEGS) in Jeffords Hall on UVM campus.

Dr. Judith Van Houten, State EPSCoR Director, is delighted to welcome Dr. Zia in his new position. "We have benefitted greatly from Dr. Zia's ingenuity and leadership in our research and modeling efforts. Now we have even more benefit as he expands his role in VT EPSCoR. Dr. Zia also provides an international perspective and prestige to our work. His prominence in the work of climate change research will help to bring more visibility to Vermont research."

Please join in welcoming Asim Zia as the Associate Project Director of VT EPSCoR.
