A very successful and interactive “All Hands Meeting” for RACC and NEWRnet was held on February 6, 2016 at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont. Dr. C. Susan Weiler, NSF Program Director, attended and provided welcoming remarks to the group along with Dr. Judith Van Houten, VT State EPSCoR Director. A series of innovative presentations from science leaders, graduate research associates and post-doctoral associates were conducted in short time sequences to provide an overview of the work and progress of the research. Presentations were grouped in teams and by area of study.
Lindsay Weiland, Director for Workforce Development and Diversity (VT EPSCoR CWDD) at Saint Michael’s College also gave an update on the program and shared the development of a new exchange between two Vermont high schools (BFA Fairfax and Hartford) and two high schools in Puerto Rico who will be visiting each other to discuss their research projects. Dr. Declan McCabe, Professor of Biology at Saint Michael’s College, also presented the innovative mobile application that was developed and is now being used as part of the cyber-enabled research to help undergraduates identify macroinvertebrates. The app was developed by VT EPSCoR and a graduate class in computer science at the University of Vermont. Internal Steering Committee Member, Linda Bowden, from the Leahy ECHO Center in Burlington, also attended. Dr. Donna Rizzo, Professor in the School of Engineering at UVM, led a brief writing exercise to collect information leading to a synthesis paper.
