2017 Grant Writing Workshop

Vermont EPSCoR held a Grant Writing Workshop at Trader Duke's Hotel (formerly the Doubletree) in South Burlington, Vermont on Saturday, November 11, 2017. This day-long workshop provided helpful information and hands-on proposal writing instruction to over 35 graduate research assistants, post-doctoral associates and faculty.

The workshop was opened by Dr. Arne Bomblies, Sr. Associate Director of VT EPSCoR followed by Dr. Jeralyn Haraldsen, Grant Proposal Manager, at the University of Vermont, who gave a keynote presentation on the proposal review process focused on federal agencies. This was followed by a very interactive faculty, graduate student and post-doctoral panel discussion in which panelists shared their experiences as reviewers for NSF panels and/or their tips for writing successful proposals. The panel included VT EPSCoR faculty Drs. Lesley-Ann Dupigny-Giroux and Breck Bowden; Post-doctoral Associate, Dr. Scott Hamshaw, and Graduate Research Assistant, Maike Holthuijzen. Also featured on the panel were faculty members Dr. Paul Hines, Associate and L. Richard Fisher Professor of Electrical Engineering, and Hamid Ossareh, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering.

Hilda Alajajian, Grant Resources Specialist with UVM's Sponsored Project Administration, rounded out the morning session with an overview of how to search for funding opportunities with the SPIN and PIVOT systems. The afternoon session featured a hands-on writing workshop where attendees were able to create a successful one-page pitch for future grant proposals.
